The New Mexico Nursing Education Consortium (NMNEC) is excited to share the updated Medication Calculation Testing Guidelines, which are now available for implementation in the Spring 2025 semester. These revisions, developed by the NMNEC Curriculum Committee and approved by the NMNEC Leadership Council, are designed to enhance clarity, minimize confusion, and promote consistency across NMNEC nursing programs.

Highlights of the Updates

The updates incorporate valuable feedback from the NMNEC Program Directors Group and the NMNEC Curriculum Committee. Key improvements include:

  1. Refined Rounding Rules:
    • Clearer explanations of the purpose of rounding rules.
    • Reorganized presentation of the rules by reversing their order and removing numbered steps, simplifying their application for students.
  2. New Teaching Resource:
    • A newly developed optional handout on rounding rules is now available as a Teaching Resource to help faculty reinforce rounding rules with students.

Notes

  • The NMNEC Medication Calculation Testing Guidelines aim to standardize core components of medication safety calculation testing (content) across NMNEC programs.
  • It is important to note that these Guidelines differ from the NMNEC Medication Calculation Testing Policy, which outlines testing logistics such as timing and minimum passing grades.
